A safety and conservation-style repair in progress: Summer 2003
|
Woodlawn Cemetery is vitally concerned with the safety of monuments as well as the conservation of the history contained in the monumental stones. The job of maintaining the safety of 12,000 monuments is a vast but important task, and one in which Woodlawn is proud to report tremendous progress in the last nine years.
This Historic Monument Care sub-site includes sections on Monument Safety,
Historic Conservation,
Monument Cleaning And Assessment Service
Feature Repairs: Watch Our Progress,
Monument Repair Workshops, and,
Conservation and Monument Care Links.
These sections contain information on monument repairs, conservation, & cleaning. They link to photo galleries which detail two exemplary repairs completed in 2003, and tie in with photos of our progress in on-going feature repairs. Further information on conservation and monument care is available online through the Links provided. We provide a free Monument Assessment Service for individual monuments in Woodlawn Cemetery (please see the full page description by following the link).
The Angel Project is an on-going programme to initiate the conservation and repair of the historic marble monuments in Woodlawn-- and to raise awareness and monies for this work. Please visit the project page for information, and ways that you can help. In addition to the on-going safety and conservation projects, the Cemetery completes payable and partially-subsidized repairs. Repairs are completed to the highest standards and follow best practices for conservation whenever possible.
Although we do not have any current volunteer monument projects, there are a number of possibilities that we are examining. If you have a particular interest in tombstones, or in scanning photos/documents and creating a database, we would love to hear from you. It might be possible to design a volunteer project to fit your interests and help preserve our historic cemetery.
Donations to help with the Care & Maintenance of monuments, or to fund specific repairs, are graciously accepted-- and, in many circumstances, can count as a Charitable Contribution for tax purposes.
Please contact us: and, if your interest is specifically related to the Historic Monument Care program, please specify "attention: Historic Monument Care". The Monument Care Co-ordinator , responsible for the gravestone conservation projects (and this historic monument care site) is C. Sach Killam, available through the Woodlawn office and as 'skillam' at the cemetery server.
